INSTO | UN Tourism International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories
The International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO) of the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) is a network of tourism observatories that monitor the economic, environmental and social impact of tourism at the destination level. The initiative is based on UN Tourism’s long-term commitment to sustainable and resilient sector growth through measurement and monitoring, supporting evidence-based tourism management.

Headquartered in Madrid, the World Tourism Organization (UN Tourism) It is a specialized agency of the United Nations, being the main international organization in the field of tourism and a world forum for the debate of tourist policies. The UN Tourism affiliate program promotes cooperation between the public and private sectors, bringing together more than 400 entities at an international level. In Portugal, there are currently 11 affiliated members, with the Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory, so far, the only regional entity integrated in this international network.
Destination Watch | Network of Regional Observatories for Sustainable Tourism
The Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory is part of the Destination Watch, created by Turismo de Portugal, which brings together the Regional Observatories of Sustainable Tourism with the aim of strengthening the monitoring of sustainability and the sharing of good practices between regions. This national network was launched in July 2024, consolidating an integrated approach to the sustainable management of tourism in Portugal.
MSTO | Mallorca Sustainable Tourism Observatory
In 2024, the Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory signed a collaboration protocol with the Mallorca Sustainable Tourism Observatory, with a view to sharing good practices, monitoring methodologies and joint development of tourist information systems, reinforcing the mutual commitment to sustainability and innovation in the sector.
Azores DMO | Destination Management Organization
The Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory collaborates continuously with the Azores DMO In the process of certification of the Azores destination by the company EarthCheck, participating in the Advisory Committee on Sustainability of the Azores Tourist Destination, contributing to strategic sustainability initiatives and stimulating the development of sustainable tourism among the partners of the public and private sectors.
