OTSA produces and interprets quantitative and qualitative data on tourism in a systematic way, ensuring that strategic decisions on regional tourism are based on scientific evidence, and not just on perceptions. As a member of the INSTO of the World Tourism Organization (OMT), the OTSA is responsible for monitoring the 11 global sustainability indicators in the Azores, allowing the region to assess and adjust its environmental, social and economic performance against international standards.

Technical support for the international certification of the Azores

OTSA collaborates with Azores DMO in the Azores certification process as the world’s first sustainable island tourist destination, providing crucial data and technical indicators for the maintenance and evolution of this certification.

The Observatory collects, analyzes and publishes regular surveys of tourists, residents and companies, allowing them to understand the perceptions and trends of the sector. These publications constitute a reference source of statistical and scientific information for public, academic and private entities.

The Observatory has already promoted and participated in research projects financed by the European Union, such as the Creator Azores (Creative Tourism) and the Green Gardens – Azores (value of historic gardens), contributing to the diversification of the tourist offer and the reinforcement of the Azores image as a destination sustainable.
