Institutional Framework

The Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory (O.T.S.A.) is a non-profit, private law association, founded in 2006, with the objective of promoting the analysis, dissemination, and monitoring of tourism activity, in order to contribute to the sustainable development of tourism in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

The founding members are the Autonomous Region of the Azores, the Azores Tourism Association (ATA | Visit Azores), and the University of the Azores.

Mission

To promote the analysis, dissemination, and monitoring of the evolution of tourism activity, in an independent and responsible manner, guaranteeing the integrity of its technical and scientific output, in order to contribute to the development of sustainable tourism in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and integrated into global regional development strategies.

Vision

To transform the Azores Sustainable Tourism Observatory into a leading center for information and monitoring of tourism activity in the Azores Autonomous Region, strengthening support for strategic decision-making by various public and private stakeholders, and contributing consistently to the sustainable development of the regional tourism sector.

what we do?

O.T.S.A. is the regional center for knowledge, monitoring, and analysis of tourism activity in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In a context where tourism plays a central role in the economic and social development of the archipelago, the Observatory monitors the sector’s evolution, contributing to informed and sustainable destination management.

We collect, produce, and disseminate reliable and rigorous data, supporting evidence-based decision-making and promoting balanced tourism that values ​​natural resources, cultural identity, and the well-being of local communities. Through indicators, studies, surveys, and strategic analyses, we help to understand the dynamics of tourism and guide its sustainable development across the nine islands of the Azores.
